Alternative Learning Path for Students (ALPS)

Grades: 11-12

The ALPS (Alternative Learning Program for Success) at Dowell J. Howard is designed for upperclassmen seeking a supportive, low-distraction environment to achieve their academic goals. The program offers tailored learning opportunities to help students stay on track for graduation and develop essential social and life skills.

Profile of an ALPS Student

The ALPS Program is designed for students nominated by an administrator or school counselor, who have made a self-request, or who have been placed by a Hearing Officer. With class sizes typically limited to 12 students, the program provides a focused, low-distraction environment where students receive intensive weekly support to meet their individual needs and goals. ALPS is ideal for students who struggle to succeed in a traditional school setting, whether or not they have had disciplinary concerns. Parents and students must agree that a placement at Dowell J. Howard is in the student's best interest unless the placement is mandated by a Hearing Officer.

Program Features

  • Full-Year Block Scheduling for grades 11 and 12.
  • Small Class Sizes with a maximum of 12 students per class, allowing for personalized attention and support.
  • Social Skills Group support to enhance interpersonal development.
  • Lower Student-to-Counselor Ratio to ensure individualized emotional and academic guidance.
  • Reduced Total School Size to foster a more focused and supportive environment.

Academic Opportunities

Students are enrolled in 7 courses during the school day, with opportunities to earn additional credits through the APEX program outside of regular school hours. Monitor-only courses are available for students aiming to catch up or get ahead in credits, though they will not receive additional instructional support.
