GMU Data Science and Computing Lab School at DJH
Mission
To create innovative pathways designed to help students and teachers from rural and rural fringe school divisions add Data Science, Computing and Applications expertise to their skill set and make informed data-driven decisions to contribute meaningfully to their communities.
Vision
To create a data-literate next-generation workforce empowered with the skills, knowledge, and mindset necessary to thrive and solve problems in a data-driven world to bring about positive change.
Dowell J. Howard hosts the GMU Data Science and Computing Lab School for students in grades 10 - 12 who reside within Frederick County. Intensive course offerings are offered in Data Science, Computer Science and Science featuring three pathways:
- Workforce Credentials/Certifications: College credits toward Career Studies Certificates in Computer Science & AI & Applied Data Science
- Associate’s Degree coursework
- Apprenticeships with VA Works
Outcomes
- Conduct Mentored Research - Lab School students will conduct university-mentored research with college professors.
- Earn free College Credits - Take advanced college courses in Data Science, Computer Science and AP Science courses
- Earn a Career Studies Certificate in Computer Science and AI & Applied Data Science
- Multiple Options - Earn college credits, have options for an associate's degree and/or a workforce apprenticeship.
- Cross-curricular projects, regional and division Science & Engineering Fairs and competitions in math, science and computer science
Frederick County Public Schools are partnering with George Mason University, Laurel Ridge Community College, the Smithsonian-Mason Conservation Center, VA Works and local businesses to provide university-mentored research, field experiences, and work-based learning.
